“Thank you for coming over at the last minute, Veera.” I wrap my arm around her shoulder and take the bags of delicious homemade meals from her hands. “How’s Rani holding up?”

“Well, they managed to pull out the thorn from her paw, but overall, she’s managing everything else just fine.”

“Vee!” Zoha dashes down the stairs and enters her nanny’s arms. “Are you ready for our date today?”

“Of course! We’ll have much more fun than your parents.” Vee peers at me. “Where are you two going again?”

“To make candles,” announces the vibrant voice from the top of the stairs.

I rubber-neck at the sight of . . . My god.

My flickering eyes linger on Alina descending the steps, taking in the natural beauty of her sun-kissed skin and the delicate floral pattern of her dress. The way it hugs her curves and flows with every step she takes is like watching summer in motion.

Tiny, golden butterfly clips adorn her side braid, making me ache to tangle my fingers in those silky black-and-white strands.

Her neckline draws my attention to the elegant slope of her collarbones, and I imagine tracing her soft skin with my lips.

And the way her dress splits at the side, revealing a smooth, bare thigh sends me into vertigo.

As she approaches me, I inhale the intoxicating aroma of jasmine and cocoa butter, my eyes closing briefly as I register the magic she’s placed me under.

She would’ve intimidated me if we went to high school together. Not only did she have a knack for playing pranks on me when we were children, but the fear of being rejected by her would have been a deal-breaker.

It would’ve signalled the end of me, for sure.

“Ready to go?” Alina’s raspy voice breaks through the trance.

I hesitate momentarily, lost in her spellbinding aura, before returning to reality. “Ye—Yeah, I’m good to go.” I clear my throat to mask my unsteady voice.

I catch Vee and Zoha’s smirks, seeing clear through my bullshit, but I don’t care.

I lean down to give them goodbye kisses on their foreheads, glancing at the fridge door to fix my hair.

Alina catches up with me as I take out my Oxfords and sit down on the settee. She sits beside me with her sandals, her shoulder gently brushing mine. Dammit, Alina.

Even her tap on my shoulder makes me gulp a little too loud. “Strap my heels for me?”

“No.” I struggle with the laces on my shoes.

“Dickhead,” she mumbles, slipping off her indoor sandals to replace them with the fancy, golden ones in her lap.

This woman is a master at playing mind games, and I can’t deny the intoxicating effect she has on me. Every fibre of my being is drawn to her, driving my senses wild.

“Stop.” I curse myself silently as I kneel before her, taking hold of her slender heel. As my fingers brush against her silky skin, a bolt of electricity fires up my arm. Come on, Azeer, get a grip. It’s just an ankle. “Shoe.”

Diligently, she hands me the first sandal, and I smoothly ease her foot into it.
